Do the battery terminal have to be disconnected to use this product?

Answer:

The instructions say, "To start charging, first connect the charger to the battery, then plug in the AC line cord. To stop charging, first disconnect the charger from the battery, then unplug the AC line cord."
If this charger is being used to charge a battery in a system (like a car), I would recommend disconnecting the battery from the system. Automobile systems may require initialization after reconnecting the battery.

what is the red light and green light for?

Answer:

This is a FLOAT CHARGER. MEANING the battery should generally be fully charged everytime you connect it. The light should be GREEN 99.9% of the time. The ONLY time the charger turns red (charging) is when it (the battery) has lost a certain amount of power FROM JUST SITTING FOR MONTHS WITHOUT USE. In those cases, the light will turn red for a relatively SHORT period of time simply to "top the battery off.
